Calling and Election of the Candidate
The candidate for Ordination is called by name and presented to the Bishop as worthy of ordination.
Consent of the People
By applauding, the People of God indicate their acceptance of the Bishop’s decision to ordain this man a Deacon for the Church.
Homily
The Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert, D.D., J.C.L. Bishop of Allentown
Examination and Promises of the Elect
The Bishop examines the candidate as to his readiness to be consecrated to a ministry of service, preaching, and prayer.
Commitment to Celibacy
A life of celibacy is seen as a sign of total commitment to the Lord and to the Church for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The candidate for Ordination is asked to commit himself to this lifelong service.
Promise of Obedience
The candidate kneels before the Bishop and promises respect and obedience to him and his successors.
Invitation to Prayer congregation stands The Bishop invites all present to pray for this chosen man who is to be ordained a Deacon.

Laying on of Hands congregation sits In silence, the Bishop lays hands on the candidate. This gesture, together with the Prayer of Ordination, is the outward sign of the ordination to the Order of Deacons.
Prayer of Ordination
The Bishop will pray the solemn Prayer of Ordination. After recalling the sons of Levi who ministered in the Old Testament sanctuary and the first seven men ordained to the Diaconate by the Apostles for a ministry of service, the Bishop asks the Lord to send the Holy Spirit upon the candidate.
Investiture with Stole and Dalmatic
Now set apart to serve the People of God as an ordained Deacon, he is vested first with a stole which he will wear at liturgical functions and the celebration of the Sacraments. He is then vested with the dalmatic, the outer garment worn when assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The newly ordained Deacon approaches the Bishop and receives the Book of the Gospels, indicating his ministry of preaching and teaching the Gospel message.

The Bishop, and all deacons present, offer the fraternal kiss of peace to the newly ordained as a sign of welcoming into the Order of Deacons.
