The Chrism Mass is the Mass when the bishop consecrates the holy chrism and blesses the oil of catechumens and the oil of the sick. Priests are brought together and concelebrate this Mass as witnesses and cooperators with their bishop in the consecration of the chrism because they share in the sacred office of the bishop in building up, sanctifying, and ruling the people of God. This Mass is therefore
a clear expression of the unity of the priesthood and the sacrifice of Christ,
which continue to be present in the Church. The Mass takes its name from the most eminent of the three holy oils which the bishop commissions for his local church’s use over the following year. While the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of the Catechumens are simply “blessed,” the Sacred Chrism is “consecrated,” and all the priests present participate in the latter moment by extending their hands toward the vessel containing it as the bishop says the prayer of consecration.
The Oil of the Sick, to which Saint James refers (James 5:14) is used in the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The priest anoints the forehead and the palms of the sick, while praying that God will save and raise them up. The anointing accompanies a prayer for physical and spiritual healing.
The Oil of Catechumens is used to strengthen and purify those preparing for baptism. St. Hippolytus in 215 AD wrote of an “Oil of Exorcism” used to anoint the catechumens immediately before baptism. We continue this practice today. We pray that the catechumens will have strength and wisdom to understand the Gospel and to accept the challenge of Christian living. This anointing leads them toward baptism.
The Sacred Chrism is used at the ordination of priests and bishops, baptisms, confirmations, the consecration of altars and the blessing of churches, where
the walls are anointed with it in the shape of the sign of the cross. In each case, when Sacred Chrism is used, there is an ontological change, which means that the identity of those or that being anointed is changed forever. As part of the consecration of the Chrism, balsam is poured into the oil, which gives it a sweet smell intended to remind those who encounter it of the “odor of sanctity” to which those people and things who are marked with it, and by extension all of us, are called to strive for. The consecration of the Sacred Chrism is different from the blessing of the other oils. Here the bishop breathes over the vessels of chrism, a gesture which symbolizes both the Holy Spirit coming down to consecrate this oil, and the life-giving, sanctifying nature of the character of the sacraments for which it is used. (Recall how Jesus “breathed” on the apostles on the night of Easter saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”)

“The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me.”
Please remain standing until the conclusion of the blessing with the Book of the Gospels.
Homily The Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert Bishop of Allentown
Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service
(Priests stand, congregation remains seated)
Bishop: Beloved sons, on the anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred his priesthood on his Apostles and on us, are you resolved to renew, in the presence of me and God’s holy people, the promises you once made?
Priests: I am.
Bishop: Are you resolved to be more united with the Lord Jesus and
more closely conformed to him, denying yourselves and confirming those promises about sacred duties towards Christ’s Church which, prompted by love of him, you willingly and joyfully pledged on the day of your priestly ordination?
Priests: I am.
Bishop: Are you resolved to be faithful stewards of the mysteries of God in the Holy Eucharist and the other liturgical rites and to discharge faithfully the sacred office of teaching, following Christ the Head and Shepherd, not seeking any gain, but moved only by zeal for souls?
Priests: I am.

Bishop: And pray also for me, that I may be faithful to the apostolic office entrusted to me in my lowliness and that in your midst I may be made day by day a living and more perfect image of Christ, the Priest, the Good Shepherd, the Teacher and the Servant of all.
Congregation: Christ hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. Bishop: May the Lord keep us all in his charity and lead all of us,
