Our President/CEO Je rey J. Albert shared a recap of 2017, and a look into what’s coming in 2018 and beyond. Two positions on the Board of Directors were lled at the meeting. Gary M. Haas and Robert W. Nolter were elected to serve a three-year term.To view the 2017 Annual Report, visit PeopleFirstCU.org or request a copy by calling 610.797.7440.We n d to use technology to w k to stay ahead of aud.Letter from the CEOThe more things change, the more they stay the same. The way we “banked” over the past few years seems to have changed dramatically. Visa®, the precursor to the rst national credit card, was introduced in 1958 and was meant to replace cash as a means of making purchases. The ATM, introduced 50 years ago, was predicted to replace branches and tellers for our cash needs. Mostof us can’t remember a time when credit cards and ATMs weren’t the standard methods of buying groceries or making a quick withdrawal. We certainly can’t imagine how we could live without them now.Fraud certainly is one place where technology has changed things a lot. We now read about data breaches, hackers, and the dark web. It seems fraudsters are coming out of nowhere. But there too, much of the activity has just moved from one place to another. From counterfeit currency to counterfeit plastic cards. From stealing checks to stealing account login credentials.Just as technology has quickened the pace of our lives, it has quickened the pace fraud can happen. As a result, we need to use technology to work to stay ahead of the fraud. SecurLOCK Equip is a mobile app which allows our Visa® credit and Visa® debit cardholders to monitor and limit the usage of their card. You can download that app from your smart device’s app store today. See page 5 for more information.Another mobile upgrade is the launch of a new Mobile Access app. This new app will have some great new additions. Most notably it will allow for bill pay from your phone and the ability to see check copies. This app also has speci c functionality for tablets and smart watches. Those details are on page 4.As we move into the next era of “banking,” we know there will be many changes ahead. We also know one thing will stay the same. People First will be here to adopt those new technologies and continue to provide the same level of service that has made us the leading credit union in the Lehigh Valley.Calendar of EventsLEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS BIRTHDAY BASH DRAWING• May 25-Whitehall• June 29-Devonshire • July 27-TrexlertownLOBBY DAYS-MEET THE EXPERTSPeople First Business Services• June 8-TrexlertownBetter Homes First Heritage Realty• June 8- BethlehemMEMBER ONLY AUTO SALE- ENTERPRISE CAR SALES• Friday, May 189:00 AM – 7:00 PM• Saturday, May 19 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM• Details on the back coverMEMBER EDUCATION SEMINARAuto Buying Seminar• Wednesday, May 23 6:15 – 8:00 PM Devonshire O ce RSVP by calling 610.797.7440 Ext. 768PEOPLE FIRST BOARD OF DIRECTORSCHAIRPERSON:Frederick A. Develop a PlanIf there are errors on your creditreport, have the credit bureaus investigate and correct them. Set goals and time frames for future major credit endeavors.3. Bankruptcy Today— Homeowner TomorrowIf you recently led bankruptcy orif you don’t have any open credit, start building credit as soon as possible. Try to obtain several new accounts or sources such a secured credit card, department store cards or being put on someone else’s account as an authorized user. The lower your starting credit scores, the more your need to have positive items reporting. For secured cards remember the following:● Try to never carry over balances (pay balances in full).● Purchase one thing on credit that you would normally pay cash for (say for $20.00), and pay the bill as soon as it arrives. If paid in full during the grace period, typically between 21 to 30 days, no interest is charged. Follow this practice consistently and NEVER miss a payment.4.Keep Older Accounts OpenIf you already have credit open, keepyour oldest accounts. Even if there were late payments in the past, pay them on time now. And remember, the older the account, the more it will help your credit.5.Make Your Payments on Time Always.6.Pay Down Your Credit Card BalancesTarget to have the total amount of outstanding revolving debt at 30% or less of the total available credit limits.Once new positive sources are created, avoid all unnecessaryinquiries. Don’t ll out any additional applications for credit. For home purchase or re nance, old collections/judgments/unpaid taxes/unpaid child support must be dealt with. Look at the date of the item, compare to statute of limitations for that item, and plan a strategy to address each.PEOPLE FIRST OFFERS TWO GREAT PRODUCTS THAT CAN HELP YOU FIX OR START BUILDING CREDIT.Credit Builder LoanThis loan product is built to help members who do not have the funds for a traditional share secured loan. Perhaps you’ve always dreamed about a gourmet kitchen or turning the basement intoa family room. No matter what the project, there are lots of things to consider. How it may a ect the value of your home is one of the biggest. You may not be surprised to hear that bathroom and kitchen remodels have higher returns. According to HGTV.com, minor bathroom remodels have the highest return of any home improvement project. They estimate a cost of $10,500 to replace the tub, tile surround, oor, toilet, sink, vanity, and xtures.A minor kitchen remodel is thenext best project and will cost about $14,913. This project will include cabinet refacing, a new oven, sink and xtures, laminate countertops and ooring. This project can return close to the full investment at resale.Another home improvement project that may return as much as it costs is landscaping. Adding a focal point like a walkway or fountain can be great additions to a landscaping project. Other exterior improvements like new siding or paint can also provide a good return.HGTV suggests you may want to consider basic maintenance before improvement projects. Potential buyers may not look past a leaking roof orold furnace to see the new bathtub or granite countertops. Many buyers plan on doing a remodeling project after purchasing a home but may not expect to need to start with repairs. It pays to do your own research when choosing a project. You can speak toa trusted realtor to ask what home features potential buyers are looking for. Or you may want to look at the homes in your area and compare their features to your own home.Maybe, the resale value impact of a project isn’t your primary concern. One recent trend brought on by the shortage of available homes for sale, is to remodel your own home to add those features you’ve been wanting.Once you have chosen your home improvement project, you will need to decide how to pay for it. A home equity loan from People First may be the best choice. So whether you decide to buy a new home or upgrade your current one, we o er many di erent options from mortgages and home equity loans to a home equity line of credit that allows you to borrow exactly how much you need, exactly when you need it.6 Firstword 2018 Spring Edition]]></page><page Index="7" isMAC="true"><![CDATA[FIVE STRATEGIES TO AVOID THE‘Grandparent Scam’e eRecent cases of two senior citizensin Pennsylvania falling victim to the “Grandparent Scam” are reminders that people of all ages need to pay attention to details and exercise caution before sending money across long distances and state or international borders, says Secretary of Banking and Securities Robin L. Wiessmann.Senior citizens in Berks and Bucks counties were victimized and lost thousands of dollars to criminals who followed this script:● A grandparent receives a phone call and a young voice says, “Hi Grandma (or Grandpa), it’s me.” In a moment of confusion, the grandparent answers this greeting with something like “Yes, Michael (or Sharon). How are you?” Alternatively, a stranger purportingto be an attorney, law enforcement o cial, or friend may be on theline claiming a grandchild has been arrested or is in otherwise dire straits.● The scam artist tells the victim about an emergency – legal trouble in a foreign country, a medical emergency, or a lost/stolen wallet – and that grandma or grandpa can help by wiring money to a faraway city.● The caller will then swear “grandma”to secrecy (“mom and dad will get angry if they know about the trouble I’m in”) or will insist the grandparent’s action is required far too swiftly to allow time to contact other family members.● The victim then wires hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the faraway city. Sometimes the scam continues for days or weeks, with follow-up calls explaining that for whatever reason, the rst wire transfer did not contain enough money and the “grandchild” needs more money wired immediately.Wiessmann notes that once the wire transfer is completed, the money most likely cannot be recovered. She advises senior citizens to take the following steps to protect themselves from the Grandparent Scam:1. Call your relative back using a phone number known to you.2. Ask the caller personal questions known only to family members.3. Don’t send money right now.4. Be cautious about wire transfers–that money cannot be recovered.5.
